Hey Roscoe, You sure sounded and looked great, playing Royal Albert Hall
with the Chicks last weekend. What a treat to get to go over and see you! As
great as that was, me and Big D. can't wait to see back here in Austin, playing
either some great blues at Antone's with the Blue Monday Band, or jazz with
Brannon and Ephraim at the Elephant Room. Safe travels and see you soon! Kelley

Hey Roscoe,I'll try not to take up too much room here...just wanted to say
thank you for making the video "Blues Foundations".Bought it the other day and
in my humble opinion it's the best video out there!!I really like how in the
video you take the time to demonstrate and slow down on some of the techniques
you use.By the way....I "lucked" into a 5 string Fender Jazz bass.....50th anniversary
model in 99% condition....still has all the original paper work and truss rod
tool and the original case it came in! Number 207 of 500.I put a new set of
LaBellas on it and it sounds beautiful man....as much of a perfectionist as
you are when it comes to your guitars I think you would really love this one.ok....enough

better was seeing you jam while we were in the coop :) Thanks Roscoe, I hope to

Roscoe - WOW man thanks for the quick reply. .... I can't say how excited I am
to get an RB4. I have even encouraged people to write Fender to demand them and
have made many calls to them myself, that's why I ordered immediately without
even being totally certain what I'm getting. I've had an RB5 for years and
totally love it, but I think a 4 would be just right. .... I ordered with the
Rosewood fingerboard 'cause that's all the Fender Price List says is available.
I'll look into the Maple as well though. .... How are the finishes? I am only
keen on either the Sunburst or Cocoa Trans and as I said I ordered Cocoa Trans.
Any opinions on those colours or the finishes in general? .... I love Gotoh
bridges, I hope they stay with a mass bridge. .... Thanks again and good
bassin' to you man !!!

Smash, Congratulations, you're the first to order that I know of. There's lot of
fine detail changes coming up in the RB4. For one thing, it's available with
either a rosewood or maple fingerboard. I've asked Fender to make the necks
with quarter-sawn maple. I suggest the maple fingerboard, I'm finding them to
be more stable. The four string basically has everything that the 5 string has
(except for maybe the Gotoh bridge) -and more. We're finalizing the last
details of the instrument now. Good luck, and I hope it's everything I'm
working for it to be! Roscoe

ROSCOE - I'm the first in Canada to order an RB4 (in Cocoa Transparent). .....
My wait is approx 90 days. ..... Can you give me any idea what, if any,
differences actually exist between the RB5 and the RB4? ..... I'm told by the
Fender rep the only difference is the fingerboard being Rosewood instead of Pao
Ferro, but the Fender site says differently
http://www.fender.com/60cyclehum/07282003/roscoe.html ..... It also says the
RB4 will "feature most of the same features as his 5-string artist series
bass." .... Most or all? .... Lastly, I notice the RB4 you're checking has a
Maple fingerboard and so does the RB5 you're checking it against (see pictures
in the above link). ..... What gives? ..... Caught your act on the Dixie Chicks
tour. Steady work, man. ..... Cheers !

It seems to me that on the 5 string Fender the snares are not so near to each
other as on the J Bass. I like the sound of the J bass but the neck of the
P-bass fits me better. So I was thinking to let by make by Fender een P - Bass
with the humbuckers that we're on the 5 string so.I have an active P-BAss as
that humbucker on the bridge is that compatible with the humbuckers on the 5

Hey Roscoe! My name is Lauren Lush and I attended the Chicks concert in
Columbus, on 6-10-03. It was the most awesome concert experience of my life,
and I do not think anyone else will ever be able to top it! Also, you did a
swell job entertaining the crowd, jamin and playin. The band was awesome, and
everything seemed to go in sync with one another. Good job! Last night when my
head hit the pillow, I said a prayer for the chicks, that they kick some ass on
this tour. And that they hit the ground running. I really think that they
deserve all the fans that they've got. They earned them through their hard
work, down to earth attitudes, and beautiful voices! I sure as hell am gonna
tell my grankids one day about it, and im gonna say what kick ass girls they
were. Have a safe, and fun tour! Roscoe Beck Rules! Sincerely, Lauren Lush

Roscoe, I was thumbing through an rticle in bass player you wrote called the
"fear of 5". I embraced that article, because that's is what I had
initially-fear of that B string. What changed all of that was the need to play
a blues in E in the lower register without having to play the turnaround in the
higher register. I don't yet own a five, but the time I have practiced with one
I rarely ever drop below the fifth fret on the B string. You've made me a
believer. Aditionally I can't say how much your video series has made in my
playin over the last 2 years. I still go back to that video from time to time.
Take care Chris Miller

Roscoe -- when we met in Prague last year I have never forgotten your smile and
warm personality. It was such a pleasure and honor for me to share the stage

Dear Roscoe or whoever, Just got one of you're Fender Sig.Series V basses and
it's finally what I've been looking for from Fender in a 'Jazz' 5 string. It
actually sounds like a Jazz in the back pickup, unlike my American Standard 5
which is a different animal now since I put Seymour Duncan stack humbuckers in
it. Your bass will turn me on for a long time I'm sure, so thanks again.
Sincerely Stan Wood P.S. When did you go to North Texas? I was wondering cause
I was there from '77 through '81. Thanks again for a great bass and I hope to
get another one in a fretless version or pull a Jaco on one (pull out the frets
that is).

Finally finally finally got my hand on RB5. First saw this bass on your Blues
Basics tapes. I had to have it. Waited a couple month, no dealer had the TEAL
or Shoreline availible for weeks. I bought A MM SR5 w/piezo Bridge love it, But
the RB5 never left my mind. Went GC in Arlington Tx and bought a beautiful Teal
Green '98 and walk away a couple of times due to the K-Mart like sales staff. I
Just swallow my king size ego and purchased the RB5 or I was going to go nuts
thinking I could have it right now but the asst. manager is to dumb to make the
sale. When I got outside said Fug it no more money of mine goes here at the GC.
They don't give a rat's ass either. After I took it home, I play it every chance
I get. Thanks for a hell of a design it's awesome. Waiting on the 4 string.

with my brother's and his family. I spend most of my time indoors the most
happily as far as possible. Literature, theatre and various kinds of arts (such

am highly interested in technology, the nature and science, which I have a
chance to get to know more about due to the different television channels. I am
enthusiastic about sport and I can never have enough of it. I like all kinds of
music. When I don¹t watch TV, I always listen to the radio. I have a great
passion for collecting signatures which makes my life whole. I have had this
hobby for many years. It can help me forget my daily problems, take me to far
places, meet new people and cultures meanwhile also bring wonderful moments
into my life. I collect the signature of those pepole who can cheer me up and

Glad to see someone I used to play with has stuck with it and "made it". You
were kick-ass back in the early 70's. I talk to Bobby fairly often. Heard you
were back in Austin. And I see you are coming to St. Louis. Would love to visit
with you some time. Does the name Brian Bromberg ring a bell. Apparently Jaco
was a big influence on him also. Check him out at www.brianbromberg.net if you
are not familiar with him. I wish I had tapes of you and me and Bobby playing.
That would be fun to hear. Let me know if you will have time to visit in St.
Louis. You are welcome to stay at my place if you like. Just me and my wife and
son are there. My son is playing drums. I am a grandfather now. My two
daughters are living nearby as well. Hope to talk to you later. Tommy

Hello' I,ve been working on your Blues Bass Basics, the video set. I think "Its
Great" . The question I have for you is about wood and your selection of wood
on your 4 string proto type. I would like to know if you used Alder or
something other than ? Is that neck on your four string the only one of its
kind, the shape ? I live in the Tampa Bay area and there a few Fender dealers.
The local rep for Fender knows who you are. And knew well of your sellection on
your basses . I'm a video student looking for the right gov. app. to apply for
a grant ,is there a best one to apply for ? Study in private. I'm looking for a
place where I can hear you play in the area. I'll keep an eye on your webpage
from time to time. Have a good year. Sincerely, P.S.What most makes that sound
from your bass ? Its realy unique.

Dear Roscoe, I have a question about the coil mode switches on the Fender RC 5
string. The Fender info sheet says the center position is both coils of
whichever pickup is selected. The Roscoe Beck article of Bass Player says the
center positon is single coil. Doesn't the standard humbucker emply both coils
to cancel noise ? Could you please explain the meaning of series and parallel.
In the article it says 'series', down position, is the true humbucker sound,
yet Fender says this position gives you just the rear coil of the pickup,
calling it 'position 3'. Would someone please clarify this for me? Frank Nelsen

Dear Roscoe: This is a search and find letter! I'm trying to find a fellow named
Rusty Methene who used to work for Robin Brians studio in Tyler Texas. I was
told by Robin that Rusty was in Henderson Texas and was to contact David Phipps
at Opticase. Well your address came up for Opticase so I wondered if you or
anybody there at Opticase knew Rustys where abouts? He is a old friend of mine
and I would like to make contact. Thank you so much, Mike Barrett..

Just read your "Why 5" article on Bass Player Magazine's site and I was finally
elated to find someone who knows a grain of salt about 5'ers stringed as EADGC.
I've been looking around for info, but the only bassist I've heard of that uses
one is the bassist for Fred Green (funk group). Since contacting him isn't
exactly feasible, and the techs (as well as my teacher) all seem to be in the
fog about this one, I need to know if there's any special equipment I'd need to
add to a 5 string if I were to make it EADGC rather than BEADG. Obviously, a
new nut would be required...but would I have to buy new string saddles or do
something to the place where the string actually enters the bridge? Any info
would be a big help. The reason I'm asking about "Tenor 5's" is because my
teacher plays a six string and I just can't get over the sound of the C string
-- but I have neither the money, nor the hand size to start playing on that
washboard of a six string neck.

Hey Roscoe....how's it been going?Ok I hope....just had some major upgrades done
to the second bass I bought...had some beautiful abalone block inlays done on
the fretboard, changed my pick-ups{seymour-duncan on the front and fender
noiseless on the back}then had it converted to string-thru-body design, all the
work was done by a guy Named John Jagneaux in Nederland Tx....man it turned out
great....just as pretty as Fender's custom shop...plays great too!I got a set
of LaBella strings and I think I know now why you like them so much....better
sound than GHS Boomers....anyway.....I'm really proud of my new bass....just
bragging a little......holding out for a RBIV...anyway,hope all is well....take
care bro and God Bless.

Hi I'm the bass player in the Fender Europe house band with Martin Brady. Have
just bought your signature 5 string and have to tell you its the best bass I've
played. It's superb. I've been playing WAL and Warwick for years but I've made
your bass my workhorse. Thanks, fantastic workmanship by Fender and a great

hi, I´m from Prag (CZ), you played here very well but i dont know, why did you
play on your roscoe bass 4string and not on 5. It´s because the 4 is better and
the 5 doesn´t play so well, isn´t it? i´ve got nice piece of bass which is
handmade from our most famous guitarbuilder Mr. Jurkovic. I was in lucerna when
you trying on koncert and i wanted to show it to you but you were busy. my
teacher it the famous bassplayer who played before you with korinek and his
grooves. next time when you will be in prag you must show me some parades and
want to show you my bass and maybe we will change our guitars (that´s my
dream.) thank you for your visit our rep. and nice to meet you again. Vasek

Dear Roscoe, Could you shed some light on what Fender's hold up is with the
Roscoe Beck IV? Anticipation is killin' me. I want a new RB IV really bad, I
have the RB V, and it's great, but sometimes the b string hinders me a little,
plus the neck is more comfortable on a 4. Best wishes. Rick

Hi Roscoe, I've been a fender player for 26 yrs. from 63 jazz, 61 precision to
70's jazzes and precisions and since 1998- roscoebeck jazz(my main axe). I'm
one of the top players in this country (southafrica) doing all sorts of
recording sessions and gigs- jingles, cd's, theater shows, orchestra,
corporates, etc,(high xposure) on my fender and kay upright. I lecture at a
music college and because of me, all my students now play fender! blah! blah!
fender is like home to me, ok! regards the roscoebeck- it records and plays
great! but i feel like it needs xtra punch and tone(bass) in the form of a
preamp (such as the new aguilar obp-3 onboard preamp) especially "live". i read
somwhere that there is xtra wiring for alternate options. i would also like to
keep the passive option. what about connecting the 27k resistor to the volume
pot and installing a stacked bass/treble pot with active electronics? i also
never use the series switch sound and figure maybe i could put one of these
toggle switches to better use. also i dont dig the bridge with the vibrations
transfering thru all those different pieces. i prefer a standard bridge. what
about a replacement such as badass 2? will it still have thrubody option? and
correct string spacing? I've tried contacting Mark Kendrick to ask his advice
(with the info contained here) but am having difficulty finding his email
address. pls let me know of your opinion and recommendation. i respect your
work and advice. sincerely graeme currie email: gcurrie@wol.co.za

Hey all, Roscoe played on my most recent CD and he sounds awesome as usual.
What's really cool, and many of you may not be aware, is that he is as
accomplished on acoustic bass (which he plays exclusively on my record) as he
is on electric. The CD is jazz with elements of blues, funk, and R&B, with me
on electric guitars, Roscoe on upright bass, and our pal Brannen Temple on
drums. Please check it out at http://www.claymoore.com/cd.html#toatee
